There have been several attempts to create architectural designs that very well fit the single-family homes in an urban environment. But, here is an innovative attempt dubbed as Oppenheim Architecture + Design, to review the building design and topography by the architectural firm. They have tried to integrate the open yet private space of single family homes with the density and convenience of an urban setting. The result is in the form of Parcel D, which is a lively and marvelous green space and housing structure developed in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The design could amaze you by its specialized use of vegetated surfaces to blur the external form of this building so the residents could be offered a more intimate environment along with greener air to breathe in.

Neonatal jaundice or hyperbilirubinemia jaundice is a condition that severely affects many newborns in developing and lesser developed countries. This is a condition in which the levels of bilirubin in the blood spikes up which could lead to hearing loss, brain damage, intellectual disabilities and behavioral problems. Bilirubin is the product formed when old blood cells are broken down in the body. During pregnancy, the bilirubin is removed through the placenta but after birth, the baby has to evolve its own mechanism for bilirubin elimination. It has been found that the dehydration caused in newborns due to large spacing between breast-feedings is an important cause of this jaundice. It has also been found that exposure to blue light with a wavelength of 420-448 nm helps in breaking down bilirubin to biliverdin thus treating neonatal jaundice. It is here that infant phototherapy via Firefly, a part of Design that Matters’ (DnM’s) Newborn Technology Development program, comes into play.

One of the best outings with family and friends includes an adventurous pastime at the beach, making castles of sand, playing outdoor games like Frisbee, volleyball and other sports activities, accumulating seashells or just basking in the sun. However, an excursion fun-filled trip to the beach would mean carrying a lot of paraphernalia from food items, to games, to music and other sources of entertainment as well. However, the launch of some exquisite beach furniture can serve an all-time purpose for an exciting beach outing without having to carry much stuff along. Luckily some of such furniture is already available in the market and is listed below.

Going green is really the buzzword with the urban youth today but most of them don’t want to buy a bicycle because storing it is too much of a hassle. Scooters and skateboards are the most natural medium of green urban travel for this demographic but the zero cargo hauling capacity that scooters offer deters many from using them as a real alternative to fuel-guzzling modes of transport. Luckily, designer Gustavo Brenck has come up with the perfect backpack for use with scooter.

We’re quickly approaching the two-year anniversary of the tragic BP oil spill: An environmental disaster that left the normally sparkling beaches of the Gulf Coast drowning in a slick of toxic oil. As thousands of gallons of crude oil seeped into the Gulf from the decimated Macondo well, poisoning the water and seafood that lived in [...]

Written by Gwenn Jansch of New York I was at a strip mall in Annapolis, Maryland when I walked past a bank and heard a chirp. I looked down to see a hummingbird. She had a bright green head with a black bill. The bird was lying on her side and I thought she had possibly flown into [...]

To hear the oil and gas industry tell it, we just aren’t drilling enough. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge should be opened for drilling. Drill rigs should be set up off the coast in the Arctic Ocean, the North Atlantic and in the Gulf of Mexico, without improving the lax industry regulations that led [...]

The lowly leap second got a new lease on life today when delegates at an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) meeting in Geneva decided to remain undecided on whether or not to do away with this smidgen of time. So the leap second will tick on, however sporadically, for three more years, while the ITU continues [...]

In one of their sneakiest moves yet, House Republicans included almost 40 anti-environment riders on the omnibus spending bill and the payroll tax cut extension. In the tax bill, only one rider made the cut: requiring the president to make a decision on the Keystone XL Pipeline within 60 days, which was a response [...]

I think an agency has a good culture when it can lay stuff bare. Look back on the successes as well as the weird things that happened along the way. An example of this would be Barbarian Group. They are the creators of (amongst many other things) the legendary ‘Subservient Chicken” and have celebrated their first 10 years with this little online album.
Revisit great work like Samsung’s Tweet Wrapping or the CNN headlines on a T-shirt. In-jokes are littered throughout ‘Barbarian Group X‘ and as you would expect from the makers of ‘The Most Awesomest Thing Ever‘, many things were simply awesome.
Oh, and while they were at it, they also released this nice timeline of 2011′s social media milestones.

MINI is running an interesting live Facebook campaign, in which one fan can win an actual MINI Countryman. They’ve placed the car on a populair Motorshow in Brussels, only hanging on a rope. When you like MINI, you’ll get a shot of fire to burn that rope – when it breaks, the car is yours.
The live element makes the campaign exciting, as you can see your very own flame, burning the rope. Although it’s a very short moment, for which you have to wait pretty long, the moment you burn the rope works addictive. Too bad it’s raining in Bussels now, so it will take a while before the rope will get through.
Great work from TBWA\Agency.com Belgium
